Must-sees in the United States

Ça balance pas mal à Paris

Boston, Massachusetts

If you're looking for American history and delicious seafood, go no further than the city of Boston. Boston is the most populous state in New England and is home to Fenway Park, Boston Harbor, New England Aquarium and many historical sites and museums. While you're there, don't miss the clam chowder, lobster rolls, cannolis and baked beans that the city is known for.

Our advice: Visit Boston in the fall— it's at its most beautiful when the weather is crisp and all the leaves are changing color. Plan to use public transportation, since driving can be a challenge on the narrow streets of Boston.

National Mall, Washington DC

In the capital of the United States, visit the National Mall to see the iconic monuments and memorials, stately U.S. Capitol and one of the 17 Smithsonian Institution museums. Visit in the spring to see the cherry blossoms in bloom and get a taste of the country's history and government that you won't soon forget.

Our advice: Walk the National Mall at night when all the monuments are lit up. The view from the Lincoln Memorial is stunning, especially if you catch one of DC's summer thunderstorms while you're there.

Pike Place Market, Seattle, Washington

Seattle is home to one of the oldest continuously operated public farmers' markets in the United States, opened in 1907. The public market overlooks the Elliott Bay waterfront, so you can sit on the grass looking out at the water while you enjoy your lunch. The market is always bustling, with fresh fish flying, rows of colorful flowers, arts and crafts, speciality food and special events.

Our advice: Don't miss the Market Theater Gum Wall beneath the market, a brick wall covered in used chewing gum that is a colorful, if icky, local landmark. Bring a pack of gum so you can make your own mark on the wall!

Plan a budget-friendly trip to the United States

Be flexible

Being flexible with your travel dates and destination will almost certainly save you money. Consult websites like KAYAK to compare flight prices and find out when the cheapest times to travel will be. Prices can vary widely based on date (remember to check US holidays, as flights are typically more expensive around those times) and which airport you fly into. Once you're in the country, consider renting a car so you can see more of the USA and have a memorable road trip!

Stay in a home exchange

For a cheap but absolutely unique and authentic vacation, stay in a home exchange. With a home exchange, you can save up to 80% on your housing budget! You can also save on the cost of food with a home exchange, since you will be able to buy products and food at supermarkets and cook them at home.

“If it is summer and you have children, take a hike to the fire lookout at Devil’s Head in Colorado, just south of the city. Take back country roads in the mountains. Stop at one of the many hot springs. Enjoy the National and State parks.

When in Charleston, North Carolina, you will want to get out on the water. One of the easiest and cheapest ways to do that is to take the water taxi. It makes a circuit of the harbor with stops at three places giving you a look at the city from the sea. Best place to catch it is at the waterfront park.
