The Wendland today (also Hannoversches Wendland) is a landscape in eastern Lower Saxony that is largely congruent with today's Lüchow-Dannenberg district. In the Hanoverian Wendland, the rural settlement type of the Rundling is widespread and preserved. Geographically, the western Wendland is the eastern edge of the Lüneburg Heath that got its shape during the Saale Ice Age. The landscape is dominated by the Drawehn ridge, a gravel terminal moraine. Most of the Hanoverian Wendland lies in the glacial valley of the Elbe. The Wendland gained in popularity from the 1970s, especially in the context of the anti-nuclear protests around the repository in Gorleben and the related establishment of the "Republic of Free Wendland". To this day there are many activists in Wendland who continue to speak out vigorously against atom and the yellow crosses can also be seen on many houses - these stand for the X day of the Castor transports and were used as a symbol against nuclear power in the area around Gorleben accepted. Until the turn of 1989/90, the Wendland, which stretched sack-like into the GDR area, was the border area. It was a popular destination for weekend and holiday homes for many West Berliners. There was also a lot of visitors from Hamburg and the surrounding area. Some have settled here permanently. Here are some very attractive destinations in Wendland: Thurauer Berg / Turm - distance 6km Nemitzer Heide - distance 10km old town Salzwedel - distance 13km Arendsee - distance 12km city Lüchow / Amtsturm with park- distance 13km Rundlingsdorf Satemin - 17km Rundlingsdorf Lübeln with Museeum - 19km Gatow / Gatower lake and castle - distance 24km Dömitzer bridge / Museeum fortress Dömitz - 33km Schwedenschanze near Vietze - 35km Hitzacker - 35km inland thin near Klein Schmollen - 37km and many more .........
So that you can spend a relaxing holiday, we recommend arriving by bike or car. Secure parking is available. There are shops in the next town Schweskau. A small, very well-stocked Edeka, post office and DHL, general practitioners are available there. For larger purchases or for a stroll, both Salzwedel and Lüchow are the closest small towns. But a trip to Dannenberg or Hitzacker is also really worthwhile!
