"Sanctuary" was renovated in 2021. It is not really available for an exchange except with someone with a similar property in Maine, California, Europe, or somewhere we'd like to go. We'd be interested in a 1 to 3-month exchange - no points-based exchanges. The great thing about Sanctuary is that you can be in NYC for a show in about 3 hours, unlike places in Maine. But we love Maine and would like to see what a month up there would be like. So if you have an oceanfront place up there, please contact us. If you have a boat, we could allow use of our boat(s) as well.
"Sanctuary" is a secluded oceanfront home with a large deck looking directly out on Long Island Sound. Watch the sunrise, watch osprey dive for fish, and enjoy the water, where you can swim or kayak to nearby coves and inlets. If you fish, you can fish right from the rocks - you will see fish jumping out of the water on the calmer days. The home is very private, with trees between us and the neighboring homes. It is an ideal getaway where you can experience peace and quiet.
You can make fresh cappuccinos with our espresso maker and enjoy them from Adirondack chairs on the oceanside patio as you listen to the waves washing up on the rocks. Or just enjoy the same thing from the sofa on the deck.
It is located 2 hours from New York City in Guilford, a small town near New Haven that is home to many faculty from Yale University. Easy day trips to historic Mystic (45 minutes), Newport RI (90 minutes), or even Boston (2.5 hours). New York is accessible by commuter train ($22 each way).
We have 2 2-person kayaks and 4 1-person kayaks you can use. If you have not kayaked before, we recommend lessons. Long Island Sound can be dangerous.
This is a true waterfront home with trees on either side that give a fair amount of privacy (it is not in a development of any sort). Walks in either direction go right along the waterfront with beautiful views of Long Island Sound. If you're looking to meet lots of people, this isn't your house.
Or if you want a bit of time with a few more people, you can visit NYC. The train will have you at Grand Central in 2.5 hours - $20 each way ($13 for seniors!) from the station in Guilford (free parking).
If you want a place where you can enjoy time on your own without people (or with only the people you want), you have found it!
For those interested, it's located 1.5 miles from Sachem's Head Yacht Club.
If you rent a boat, there is a mooring you can use and a zodiac you can use to reach the boat. You will need solid waterman skills - know how to row a zodiac or use the small outboard.
