In France, school vacation dates vary depending on the academic zone (A, B, and C) in order to spread out vacation departures and better manage tourist traffic.
The fall vacation is at the end of October and is common throughout the country. The winter vacation generally falls in February, and the spring vacation runs between April and early May, depending on the zone. The summer vacation runs from early July to early September throughout the country.
Public holidays (such as Christmas, Easter, Ascension Day, and All Saints' Day) are the same throughout France. In addition, specific holidays such as July 14th (National Day), May 1st (Labor Day), May 8th (Victory Day 1945), and November 11th (Armistice Day 1918) are observed.
In Spain, school vacation dates can vary by region, as can public holidays. For example, some regions (but not all) enjoy a public holiday on June 23rd (Feast of St. John) and November 9th (Feast of Our Lady of Almudena).
Public holidays that are celebrated across the whole of Spain are 3 Magic Kings on 6th January, Saint Friday (which varies according to when Easter falls) and Labor Day on 1st May. Public holidays also take place on 15th August, 12th October, 1st November (All Saints), 6th December (Constitution Day) and 8th December (Feast of the Immaculate Conception).
In Italy, school vacation dates fluctuate depending on the needs and climate of each region or province.
Northern Italy often has a February vacation to enjoy winter sports, while in southern Italy, vacations run from mid-June to mid-September to avoid extreme heat waves.
Many of the religious public holidays are the same across Europe (Easter and Christmas for example). Otherwise, April 25th (Liberation of Italy) and December 8th (Immaculate Conception) are public holidays.
In the Netherlands, school vacations are organized into 3 regions, and sometimes overlap. Beyond the classic religious holidays that are celebrated across Europe (such as Easter and Christmas), public vacations take place on May 5th (Liberation Day in 1945), and on April 26th. This day is a public holiday on the occasion of the King's National Day, and it's a great moment of celebration throughout the country!
Germany has 16 regions called "Länder", and the dates of school vacations all differ from one region to another. However, German regions have 9 public holidays in common every year. October 3rd (The Day of Unity) is a public holiday which is common to all of the country. Germany also has public holidays such as Ascension Day and Pentecost which vary in date from year-to-year, so you have every chance of planning a long weekend during these periods!
Do you want to experience nature in its purest form, and discover an ideal setting for beautiful hikes? Take advantage of the school mid-term breaks in October and February, or the two-week vacation which coincides with Easter, to propose a reciprocal exchange in Ireland.
Other than the usual religious holidays, key dates to note are New Year's Day (1st January), Imbolc/Saint Brigid's Day at the beginning of February, St Patrick's Day (17th March), the first Mondays of May, June and August, plus the last Monday in October.
