Why Fall Trains Are in Demand

Foliage trains now rank among the most sought-after seasonal products in U.S. rail tourism. Riding the rails removes traffic on narrow mountain roads, opens views that highways never reach, and lets every passenger look out the window instead of at the road. Heritage lines align their schedules with regional peak forecasts, so the calendar shifts from north to south as the season moves on.

New England and the Northeast

In New Hampshire, the Mount Washington Cog Railway has climbed the Northeast’s highest peak since 1869. Its 3-mile track reaches 6,288 feet with grades up to 37%, and it was the world’s first mountain-climbing cog railway. In Vermont and Massachusetts, Amtrak’s Vermonter follows river valleys and hill towns during peak weeks. Farther south, the Lehigh Gorge Scenic Railway departs from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania, and the Catskill Mountain Railroad runs through New York’s Catskills.

From the Blue Ridge to the Rockies

Color reaches the Southeast later in October. The Virginia Scenic Railway runs through the Shenandoah Valley, while the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway follows the Toccoa River in north Georgia. Out West, Colorado’s narrow-gauge and standard-gauge lines time their trips with the golden aspens of late September and early October. In Arizona, the Verde Canyon and Grand Canyon railroads extend the season into canyon country.

How to Plan a Fall Train Escape

Prime October weekends fill first, so securing seats on premium departures well ahead is the safest approach, and weekday trips can be an alternative. Travelers using Amtrak to reach their departure point should also check the “Pause for Progress” project at Washington’s A-Interlocking, just south of Union Station. From October 16 to 26, trains to and from Richmond, Charlottesville, Lynchburg, and Hampton Roads end at Alexandria, with express buses replacing many trips. Northeast Corridor service between Washington, New York, and Boston continues to run.
