Practical, economical, eco-friendly and fun, bikes are often a great alternative to driving or public transport for getting around on vacation. And lending your bike is one of those little touches that makes an impression on your guests and contributes to the success of an exchange. Lending your bike is simple, friendly, and above all, good for the planet. In this article, you'll find everything you need to know about lending your bike as part of a home exchange: member testimonials, benefits, and practical advice.

Sharing your bike with members: a really good idea!

Lending your bike is not an obligation during a home exchange, but it is a meaningful gesture.

The HomeExchange community is no exception to the growing popularity of cycling and cycle tourism: thousands of members enjoy cycling trips to visit a city or region in a different way, and more and more hosts are happy to lend their bikes to their guests.

“Welcome, share, and cycle!”

“We recently had the pleasure of hosting a HomeExchanger, Emilie, through a hospitality exchange.A friendly aperitif, a complimentary breakfast (which is more convenient when you're cycling!)... wonderful moments of exchange and discovery!” - Dominique

“Our Swedish exchange family left us their bikes (as did we, of course)! They live 200 meters from a lake. So what do we do on Sunday mornings? We go cycling! There's a supermarket 500 meters away (with a view of the lake), so we went shopping by bike too, of course!” - Julie

Home Exchange and Cycling

“Yes, we always leave our bikes. I would even say that the availability of our cargo bike is often one of the attractions sought after by families staying at our house. We are currently on an exchange in Ghent and it's really great to be able to use our hosts' bikes and get around like the locals. This year, we have even produced a bike guide with our favorite routes for exploring our city.” Emilie

“On the island of Noirmoutier, we leave two adult bikes (with baby seats) and two children's bikes. We were lent two bikes when we went to Groix and more than six when we went to Lake Annecy. These are really nice places to cycle, so it was a real bonus!” Alice

Bike Loan

“Our guests who are interested can tell us about [their requirements] beforehand so we can check the bike sizes and get them ready. In any case, we provide basic bikes, but not necessarily electric mountain bikes... It depends on the profile (if no one is experienced).” Sophie

The advantages of lending bikes during an exchange

Cycling on Vacation

Contribute to the growth of active mobility

Cycling is undoubtedly the most enjoyable way to discover a city and its surroundings. No need to look for parking and no traffic jams, which reduces the stress associated with these types of journeys. But also, cycling allows for greater contact with nature and immediate immersion in the rhythm of local life.

By lending your bikes to your guests, you are offering them the opportunity to discover the local environment and get around in a different way: more slowly, more freely, in a way that is more respectful of the environment and the local residents. These values are entirely in line with those of HomeExchange.

A small gesture for you, a big one for the planet

Every trip made by bike rather than by car means a little less COâ‚‚ in the air. By multiplying these good travel habits through exchanges, the community contributes to a collective reduction in emissions.

Lending your bike is therefore much more than just a service: it's also a way to take concrete and simple action towards more sustainable tourism. In fact, combining home exchanging with cycle tourism is the best way to travel responsibly (and economically)!

An even more enjoyable experience

There's nothing like a bike ride to discover a neighborhood café, the Saturday morning market, or that little path that only locals know about. By lending your bikes to your guests, you also allow them to immerse themselves more easily in your living environment.

Lending your bike is also a wonderful sign of trust and a way to fully embrace the values of HomeExchange, such as sharing, respect, and hospitality.

A few tips for lending your bikes with peace of mind

Cycle touring

Check the condition of the bikes

We recommend that you check that your bikes are in good condition before your guests arrive (brakes, tires, lights, etc). Lending a bike with faulty brakes or a loose wheel, for example, can be dangerous, especially for children.

If your bikes are defective and you don't have time to get them repaired before the exchange, it's better not to make them available and to be transparent with your guests.

Communicate clearly about the terms of the loan

In general, communication is key to successful exchanges. If being able to use bikes is an essential criterion for your guests, be sure to tell them how many bikes are available, their condition and their size: this will help avoid disappointment.

“This summer on the Île d'Oléron, there were supposed to be bikes available at the accommodation. The owners were there when they told us about a bike rental company, and we didn't dare say anything, but we were disappointed. It was one of our selection criteria.” Karelle

Provide safety instructions

As HomeExchange guarantees do not cover bicycle loans in the event of theft, we advise you to provide safety instructions (including the best places to lock them up) and provide the necessary equipment, such as sturdy locks, a pump in case the tires need to be re-inflated, and helmets, especially if your bikes are being used by children.

Share your favorite routes

Why not jot down a few of your favorite bike routes around your neighborhood in a small notebook? Be sure to include the distance, difficulty level and points of interest for each route.

This will make it even easier for your guests to explore your area and is another way to show your hospitality!

HomeExchange: our commitment to sustainable tourism

Home exchange

🏠
HomeExchange and cycling are two practices that encourage discovery, slowing down and appreciating every moment.

This way of traveling proves that you don't always have to go far to get away from it all. Sometimes, the adventure begins right at the end of your path.

Since our creation, HomeExchange has been promoting sustainable tourism by fighting against mass tourism and putting kindness and hospitality back at the heart of travel, as well as helping our members to travel like locals, in favor of more responsible, thoughtful tourism.

We also strive to reduce our environmental impact through a number of commitments. For example:

  • We encourage our members to promote low-carbon activities close to home, such as cycling trips.
  • We never promote the most CO2-intensive activities through our recommendations.
👉 If you spot an old article mentioning carbon-intensive activities (such as snowmobiling, for example ;)), please let us know at impact@homeexchange.com
  • We promote local destinations or those accessible by train, showing the endless possibilities for a change of scenery without having to travel to the other side of the world.
  • We strive to inform, raise awareness and involve our community as much as possible in a responsible tourism experience through constructive and educational communication throughout their exchange.
