16 Years and 400 Home Exchanges: How One Decision Changed the Way We Travel and Live

When we started home swapping over 16 years ago, we never imagined it would change our lives the way it has. Back then, the idea sounded almost crazy to most people around us. Hand over the keys to our home to strangers? Stay in someone else's house when we'd never even met them in person? I'll admit the doubts were real. But our curiosity and our desire to explore the world differently outweighed every bit of that initial uncertainty.

Looking back now, with all the perspective that time and experience bring, we realize just how far that first step has taken us. We've traveled with our daughter to every continent on earth, and we've completed a staggering 400 home exchanges, between the homes we've visited and the families who've stayed in ours. That number rolls off the tongue easily, but behind it lies an endless catalogue of memories, stories, landscapes, hugs, and lessons that have completely shaped who we are as a family.

When we think back on everything home exchanging has given us over all these years, we realize it started with the classic fears of someone stepping into a big unknown, and it ended up becoming, without a hint of exaggeration, our actual way of life. What started as a practical solution to travel more and spend less gradually turned into a whole philosophy of openness to the world, one we wouldn't trade for anything.

Over the years, we've met incredible people and lived through experiences we never could have planned on a conventional trip. Home exchanging has opened the door to moments as magical as they are unexpected. One of the most remarkable: we got married in Las Vegas, and our exchange partners threw themselves into helping us plan the whole wedding from afar, taking care of every detail to make sure the day was unforgettable.

Another time, we spent Christmas Day celebrating with exchange partners in the Philippines, sharing traditions, laughter, and local dishes under a tropical sky that felt nothing like the holidays we'd always known. And there's more: we even rang in the New Year eating grapes at midnight with our partners and all their friends, in Mexico no less! These are experiences no travel agency can sell you. They're the direct result of the generosity and human connection that grows between people who choose to trust one another.

Sharing homes has also completely changed how we experience travel. Slower. More local. More real. We no longer rush from monument to monument or tick attractions off a tourist checklist. We settle into a neighborhood, buy bread from the corner bakery, say good morning to the neighbors, and discover the hidden spots that never make it into guidebooks but that your hosts share with you like a precious gift.

We're fully aware that many of these trips simply wouldn't have been possible without HomeExchange. The financial sustainability this model offers a family is nothing short of revolutionary. A perfect example happened a few years ago, when we spent over six weeks in Australia and New Zealand. To make that dream trip to the other side of the world a reality, we lined up 9 consecutive home exchanges across both countries. Two of those were in Sydney and the Gold Coast, where rental and hotel prices are notoriously sky-high. Under normal circumstances, the accommodation bill alone for a trip that long in destinations like those would have been completely out of reach. Thanks to home exchange, we got to enjoy a long, relaxed, deeply enriching journey without putting a dent in the family finances.

But what makes all 400 of these home exchanges truly rewarding isn't just the beautiful destinations or the savings. What matters most is the people. The incredible individuals behind each home, their generous hospitality, their genuine warmth, and all those small tips and personal touches that make every exchange feel one of a kind.

Across these 16 years, certain moments and certain people are etched into our memory forever, faces that have become part of our personal story. Once, during a home exchange, the connection with our partners was so warm and natural that when they found out the date, they invited us onto their boat and we celebrated our wedding anniversary together. We felt cherished and welcomed as if we were part of their own family.

That same closeness has left a lasting mark on our daughter, who has grown up learning values like trust, respect for others' spaces, and a love for animals and cultural diversity. On one trip, she fell completely in love with a little cat at an exchange apartment in Madrid. The bond was so strong that we went back to that same apartment four more times over the years, simply to spend time with that sweet little cat again.

When she passed away, my daughter was genuinely heartbroken. She had formed a real bond with that little animal, who had been part of her childhood at different stages. We eventually adopted a cat of our own, but that little one from the Madrid apartment will always hold a very special place in our hearts. It's these moments, small on the surface but full of feeling, that turn a simple stay into a memory that lasts a lifetime.

Looking ahead, we truly believe that all these stories, lessons, and experiences have made home exchanging an inseparable part of who we are. It has changed the lens through which we see the world, and the way we connect with the people in it.

Today, we simply don't know how to travel any other way. The idea of shutting ourselves into an impersonal hotel room feels distant, incomplete. HomeExchange came into our lives 16 years ago as a tentative experiment, and after 400 home exchanges filled with magic, emotion, and unforgettable people... we know without a doubt it's here to stay.
