Known as the Heart of the Highlands. Antigonish the town (population +/- 4,800) and the county services approximately 20,000. It sits on the northeastern shore of the province, bordered by the Northumberland Strait, St. George’s Bay and the Strait of Canso.
Halfway between Halifax and Sydney, Antigonish is a gateway to Cape Breton Island. Antigonish is home to St. Francis Xavier University, founded in 1855 and once famed for its Antigonish Movement (Cody International Institute), a program of adult education and self-help. Antigonish is also home to the Highland Games, the oldest celebration of Scottish sport and dance in North America.

Follow the shore at the cottage and along the bay. It’s a rocky beach, but you never know what you may discover that has washed up on shore. And, there is a very good chance you will have the beach to yourself! But, if you prefer a sandy beach and don’t mind company, the following suggestions may be up your alley:

Get your friends together, and have a good old-fashioned game of volleyball at West Arm Cottage! You can even enjoy a night game thanks to the Street light over the court!
West Arm Cottage is a great location for exploring other parts of Nova Scotia!
Cape Breton Island
Home of the world renowned Cabot Trail, Cape Breton Island is only a 30 minute drive away. The Highlands National Park provides for world-class hiking, golfing and camping, and breathtaking views that are sure to create memories to last a lifetime. To get the most of it, you should plan for a full day trip. It will be a long day, but well worth it.
The Town of Antigonish
“The highland Heart” of Nova Scotia. Home of STFX University, and the longest running Highland Games outside of Scotland. Come enjoy all the amenities of a big city, in a small town atmosphere. (20 minute drive)
The City of Halifax
The Capital of Nova Scotia, Halifax is a 2.5 hour drive from West Arm Cottage. Halifax is a beautiful port city and home of one of the largest harbours in the world. A worthy trip if time allows…
A unique experience is a visit to Sherbrooke Village, located approximately 1.25 hours from West Arm Cottage. Sherbrooke Village depicts traditional Nova Scotia from the 1860 to Pre WW1 era, where you will find locals dressed in traditional attire. The village represents the largest Nova Scotia museum site.
