Our home is located in the Province of Munster and in a country setting. We are just 10 minutes form the nearest city, Limerick and 30 minutes to the nearest Airport which is Shannon. We are located just outside the village of Kildimo and just 5 minutes drive to shops and bars and DeBucket John Quinn's restaurant bar on the river maigue. The area has several local Castles, including Cullam Castle, Ballyculhane Castle and Dromore Castle which overlooks a large lake. Dromore Castle is unusual in that it was built in the 19th century by the Earl of Limerick in the style of a fairytale castle. Nearby you have a lake which is stocked for fishing. Saturday mornings you can visit a farmers market in Limerick city. The city of Limerick which is just 10 minutes drive, it is built on the river Shannon which expands into the picturesque Shannon Estuary and is easily explored on foot or by bike. For the more adventurous you can view the city by kayak from the river. Limerick is steeped in history with evidence of ancient settlements in the surrounding areas though was first established as a large town by the Vikings in 800 AD. This history is displayed in King John's Castle, the Hunt museum and and Limerick City Museum. Other attractions include St Mary's Cathedral, St. John's Cathedral and the Limerick City Gallery of Art which are all in the heart of the city. There are many restaurants, pubs/bars and music venues. There are lovely river walks both in the city centre and at the University of Limerick (10 mins). There are lots of shopping opportunities; city shops, the Milk Market (usually Saturdays) which has local produce, artisan foods and arts and crafts. It is also a great place to sit on a Saturday morning and listen to music while enjoying a coffee. There are many out-of-town shopping centres/malls and supermarkets. Limerick is known as a city of sport and the University of Limerick offers a range of activities. The running track, playing pitches, tennis courts and Olympic sized swimming pool are all open to the public. The world famous Munster rugby ground Thomond Park is worth a visit. Throughout the summer months there are sports events which attract many spectators. There are many golf courses within a short drive of our home. Other activities include mountain biking in Ballyhoura Mountain Bike Centre and sailing/ boat trips at Killaloe on Lough Derg. Limerick is perfectly located in the mid-west which makes it easy to drive to other areas such as Galway (1hr 20 mins), Cork (1 hr 20 mins) and Dublin (2hrs). The coast is 1 hr with great beaches in Kerry and Clare where you can surf in Lahinch and see the famous Cliff of Moher http://www.cliffsofmoher.ie/.
