What you will love about this neighborhood

San Luis Obispo (SLO) is a "university town" of 45,000 residents. As such, it has a greater variety of cultural activities, restaurants and sporting events than the typical community its size. Its compact, vital downtown has an eclectic mix of national and local retailers and an extensive and diverse mix of eating establishments. Dine alfresco overlooking San Luis Creek as it winds through downtown or eat along Higuera Street and people watch. The restored Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa is in the heart of downtown. Established in 1772 by Father Junipero Serra, it was the fifth of California's Spanish Missions and is open to the public. Visit the Farmer's Market that closes Higuera Street to motor vehicles every Thursday evening year round (except Thanksgiving, the 4th Thursday in November) and browse the region's fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. Enjoy local, regional and national theater and musical programs at the Christopher Cohen Performing Arts Center on the campus of California Polytechnic University. These are just a few of the urban amenities available in San Luis. San Luis Obispo is an outdoor lovers paradise. Its temperate Mediterranean climate makes enjoying the outdoors a year round activity. With an average of only 50 "rainy" days per year, the weather rarely interferes with golfing, hiking, biking, surfing, sailing, kayaking or just about any other outdoor activity you can imagine. Our home is minutes from trails in the Santa Lucia Mountains to the east, the Irish Hills to the west and three of the "Nine Sisters" (ancient volcanic plugs locally known as "morros") inside the city limits. These green spaces are public and open to hiking, rock climbing and mountain biking. The beaches of the Pacific Ocean are only minutes away to the north and south. Avila Beach, ten miles south, offers a broad protected beach, ideal for sunbathing and swimming by all ages. Morro Bay, 12 miles to the north, offers a host of water based activities - from kayaking or sailing on either the bay or ocean, to surfing and sailboarding adjacent to the famous Morro Rock (the ninth "Sister" also known as the Gibraltar of the Pacific, rising 581 ft - 177 meters - out of the Pacific). Wildlife abounds in and around Morro Bay. See sea otters, seals, sea lions, whales and dolphins plus birds of all types. Hike in nearby 8,000 acre Montana de Oro State Park where the climb to the top of Valencia Peak (1347 ft, 411 m) offers panoramic views of the Pacific. Are you interested in fine wine? San Luis Obispo, which encompasses Edna Valley, is in the heart of California's third largest wine growing region. Stretching from Paso Robles in the north to Santa Ynez in the south, you will find award winning wineries offering tastings to please the most discerning palate. Want to see more of California? Centrally located San Luis makes overnight trips to Los Angeles, San Francisco and the iconic National Parks of Yosemite, Sequoia, Kings Canyon and Death Valley exciting excursions from our home. The spectacular Big Sur coast, Hearst's Castle at San Simeon, upscale Santa Barbara and the nation's newest National Park, The Pinnacles, are easily explored as day trips from SLO.
