WE HAVE LONG-TERM RENTERS IN OUR HOME CURRENTLY AND CANNOT DO EXCHANGES UNTIL 2024--THANK YOU!
Our beautiful 1889 Victorian house is in a perfect location for visitors, in the heart of San Francisco, a few blocks' walk to everything—two blocks to famous Alamo Square Park with the famous “postcard row” Painted Ladies homes and a 360-degree view of the city, four blocks to fashionable and bustling Hayes Valley cafes, eight blocks to the ballet, symphony, SFJazz (our new, world-class jazz center), and the architecture of City Hall. Also about eight blocks from Japantown and the fashionable section of Fillmore Street. This neighborhood is perfect if you want to be close to the best restaurants and shopping in town.
If you're renting a car or swapping with ours, you can park in our garage. Golden Gate Park and most of the major museums are only a 10-minute drive (or you could walk!). The magical Presidio, two gorgeous beaches, and the Golden Gate Bridge, are all just 10-15 minutes away. There is a Bay Wheels public bike stand literally across the street from our house.
This is our family home, not a vacation property. We have a huge living room with a piano, hardwood floors, 12' ceilings with plaster moldings, wainscoting, original doors and transoms, antique chandeliers, a couple thousand books, and antique furniture throughout, including a working crank Victrola.
Our next-door neighbor, upstairs neighbors, and friends will take great care of you. Plus, our housekeeper or babysitter can be available during your visit at their usual rates.
Although the kitchen cabinets are a bit outdated, we have Blue Italian Spode dishes and antique crystal, gold-rimmed stemware, a stainless steel double sink, a new Miele induction range and dishwasher, a new Bosch fridge, plus a marble bistro breakfast table. We have a new, stacked Maytag high-end washer and dryer in the unit, and bringing us into the 21st century, we have high-speed wifi and a huge 70" Sony HD SmartTV, which is hidden and slides up in front of an oil painting in our living room as needed.
All beds have high-end, two-year-old organic mattresses. The master bedroom has a California King bed, exposed brick, an antique triple armoire, and private bathroom. There is a second bathroom that is all marble and filled with antiques, crystal, and historic wallpaper you can only see here or at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City (a long story).
The second bedroom has an antique French double bed, loveseat, and small desk, crystal chandelier, and trompe l'oeil sky with clouds on the ceiling. The third bedroom has a twin antique French bed and a loft that can fit a second twin air mattress as needed. Total to sleep comfortably: six. Yes, you can fit more people on our air beds or the sofas, but not a great idea.
We have tons of children's toys and books we can leave out for you. We have toddler bedrails we can add to the already low-profile twin bed. Plus, we can tell you all the best activities and resources for children while you’re in town.
We can also provide recommendations on the best restaurants, natural beauty, historic architecture, and unique activities in the city and beyond. We're always happy to make new friends in the home exchange community!
What you will love about this neighborhood
We are in the Alamo Square Historic District and the Hayes Valley neighborhood. Hayes Valley is famous for several blocks of fashionable, Michelin-starred restaurants, over-the-top gourmet coffee, little parks, and chic shops beginning just three short blocks from our house. It has bustling outdoor spaces and culture.
Two blocks in the other direction is Alamo Square Park, the gorgeous park on a hill with huge views, tennis courts, new playgrounds, and old redwoods, surrounded by Victorian mansions, including the famous "Painted Ladies" of "postcard row," the houses you see pictures of all over the world and that are the setting for several consistently terrible American TV shows. There are at least three other parks and numerous community gardens within a few blocks, too.
A short walk, about eight blocks, is the Civic Center area, which includes the San Francisco Ballet, War Memorial Opera House, Symphony, as well as the Asian Art Museum, City Arts & Lectures, SFJazz Center, the gorgeous City Hall rotunda, and the main Public Library. We're also about six blocks from the Zen Center and ten blocks to Japantown.
Major bus lines run right by our home, as do double-decker tourist bus lines. There is now a Ford Go Bike public bike station directly across from our house. And you can get Uber or Lyft cars faster than you can get out the front door (which happens to me often). It's the perfect central location. We love living here.
To go a little wider, we are about a ten-minute bike or car ride to Golden Gate Park's major museums (or one short bus ride), and in the other direction, ten minutes and you are at major museums in SOMA. If you are a walker, we have a 99 walk score and you won't even need to drive. You can walk to some of the best restaurants and best shopping in the city (if you wear sensible shoes, and most people do in San Francisco).
Some other famous neighborhoods, like North Beach or China Town, are a 10-15 minutes drive. Also in 15 minutes you can get to two different world-class beaches--Ocean Beach on the Pacific Ocean, and Crissy Field on the bay with a view of the Golden Gate Bridge, both stunning (we take the kids to both all the time). We are ten minutes away from the historic Presidio, which is filled with green spaces and panoramic views, as well as the Disney Museum and other attractions.
Having a garage in this part of San Francisco is unusual, so we're very lucky. We encourage you to use our car and drive to Marin County and the Sonoma/Napa wine country while you're here!

Our iconic 1889 Victorian has historic character and luxury details. You'll be in the center of San Francisco and can walk to the best of everything from here. We love meeting new friends from all over the world and welcome you to our home, where we especially love to make families feel welcome!
We can sleep six people comfortably, but please contact me to discuss the arrangements to make sure everyone in your party will be comfortable. Our home is the entire, second-floor lower flat (it is not the ground floor--the garage is the ground floor) and we have an extremely nice family as long-term tenants in the third-floor upstairs flat. So the only stairs to navigate are the brick exterior entry stairs, with railing, that you see in the exterior photo.
Also, we noted in the amenities section that we have tennis courts and playgrounds--meaning we are within two blocks of more than one excellent free, public tennis court and playground, not that we have our own. For those from other climates, you might notice we do not have air conditioning, this is because no one does in San Francisco as it isn't needed. One final note: this is a strictly non-smoking and drug-free property, inside and outside the house. Thank you.
