Hello from the wonderful city of Ghent - historical and very much alive
We are a family of four : Kurt (44) and Sybil (44) are both communication consultants and running their own agency. Our daughters Juliette and Florence are 13 and 10. We like travelling, ski, cycling, hiking, reading books, BBC and HBO series and good food.
We started to exchange in 2004. We have previously had wonderful home exchange stays in Paris (3x), London (9x), Luzern and Wallis (Switzerland), Denmark, Vienna, Barcelona, the Pyrenees mountains, Amsterdam (2x), Bergen-aan-Zee, the Black Forest (Germany), Brittany and the Côte d'Azur (France), the Stockholm Archipelago, Evora and Algarve (Portugal) and Québec & Ottawa (Canada). We can't wait to do more.
When travelling with the children, we are bound to Belgian school holidays. Juliette started secondary school in September 2013. She likes art, drawing, painting, music, scouting and... Canada. Florence, aged 11, will start her last year of primary school in September 2015. She adores swimming pools, pony riding and watching My Little... Pony.
We have a dog, named Lila (° 2012). She doesn't like airplanes, trains, ski slopes and cities, so mostly she goes to stay with grandma. But sometimes she likes to go with us, especially for shorter stays in the country, because she likes big walks in the woods, on the beach and in the mountains.

We are very much into... everything out of the ordinary. When we travel, we try to go where the locals go. We prefer the little local restaurant to the international chain. We visit impressive landscapes by hiking, we prefer a surfing beach to the one crowded with tourists. We enjoy life and our home reflects that with a very well equipped kitchen and a pool in the garden in a vibrant, lively city... We are always looking to meet or exchange with likeminded people!
The house of Sybil and Kurt is in Ghent, 30 minutes on the Intercity (IC) train from Brussels Eurostar station. The house, which faces the water on both front and back, was amazing - the penthhouse stunning; the kitchen has become our dream; the garden - how we wish we had similarly green fingers. And not to forget the smaller things - the fishes, the guinea pig, the swing, and the roomba! Shame that the weather only brightened up on our day of departure. It has so many great features that have now become our inspirations for the next house to renovate/build. Sybil was a great host. She prepared notes on the area, house and was always one step ahead of me with regards of my planning of our trip. She had some dinner prepared for us so we didn't have to worry about sourcing food upon our arrival that late afternoon. The English-speaking babysitter lives just 2 doors from the house so finishing late was not an issue for her. So in summary we enjoyed our first swap in Ghent very much. Thank you very much Sybil and Kurt!
We had a wonderful stay in Freda's and Steve's home end of May 2013. The house has been recently renovated and has all modern amenities. Space was maximized and the house has lots of light and a small but sunny garden. The kitchen is very well equiped and you can get inspiration from a whole range of cookery books. If you don't go out to one of the nice restaurants they recommend you in their favourites list. They were also very helpful with other information on buses, markets, etc. Nice bathroom with walk in rain shower and another bathroom with a tub. The wooden floors on the stairs and in the master bedroom give it a warm feel - and the beds are good ! Wandsworth is on the Northern line and well connected to St Pancras International. And London is...London : there are always 1001 things to do, so no time to get bored.
The home of Kurt and Sybil is a spacious and bright modern house with very beautiful and special furnishings. We enjoyed delicious dinners at the sunny garden on the porch and even swim in the pool. The upstairs with bath, sauna, fireplace and terrace are very stylish and luxurious, the perfect place to relax. Furthermore, Ghent is a beautiful, friendly city. We often went downtown, in terms of distance just a short ride with the present bikes. Highly recommended for a great weekend getaway
Michiel’s home is located in the residential area Oud-Zuid, close to the renowned Vondelpark, the Museumplein with e.g. the Van Gogh Museum and the Concertgebouw. With its high ceilings, wooden floors and ancient elements, the home is full of character. The combination with modern furniture and personal accents in the decoration, make it a place where you really feel at home. We very much enjoyed the roof terrace to have our ‘apéro’, unfortunately we had not enough time to have a barbecue. But we went to some nice restaurants in the neighbourhood and even those further away could be easily reached within 15 minutes of cycling. We circulated in town with the bikes, visited the Amsterdam Tulip Days – we even stood in the Mayor’s back garden – and went for a 5 km run in the Vondelpark. There were many more things to do than we could, so we definitely should go back one day.
We enjoyed very much our holidays in Gent. The city is beautiful and the home is very well located, close to the historical center. It's an old house, remodeled with elegance and comfort. Vincent family provided much information about Gent and surroundings. They are very nice people and they were very respectful of our home so we recommend them for future exchanges.
If you like sunshine, sandy beaches, the blue and crystalline waters of the Atlantic Ocean ; if you want to go body boarding in the big waves of that same ocean, stay in an authentic fisherman’s village and listen at night to the sound of the soft rolling waves on the beach; if you want to eat some georgeous grilled fish that was caught the same day,… well, then a stay in Pedro’s and Carla’s beach house is definitely something for you. We have been exchanging for ten years already, we have done nearly 25 exchanges and our holiday in the South West of the Algarve was one of the best ever ! We also met Pedro, Carla and their two boys in Evora; we stayed at their home for two days and we had a wonderful time ; we really hope we will meet again in the future.
This house is beyond amazing! Cool architecture, so big and the pool situated right next to the canal. Also, Gents geografic place makes it such a great place to explore from. We went to both Germany, Holland and France during our stay. :) We were welcomed in a fantastic way and recieved so much useful information that made our stay even more special. Gent itself is charming and beautiful and you could easy just live the car your whole exchange and just walk or bicycle around. Thank you Sybil and Kurt!
