We are both former University teachers, so finding a schoolhouse to buy really spoke to us. This was a huge project, since the property had not been updated, well, ever!
We started with the main building, the original schoolhouse, which had been broken into a series of small bedrooms. We opened up the space, moving those bedrooms to an addition towards the back. The main "great room" is now back to its original proportions with 12' ceilings, a chef's kitchen and space for expansive dining and relaxing.
Next we tackled the back cabin, The Library, updating it with new appliances, a very usable kitchen with stove and small fridge, and really cute niches and design touches.
Lastly, we totally redid the "Study Hall", which had been a storage space. New electrical, sink cabinets and vintage recycled douglas fir floors went in. It is now very cosey and comfortable with a queen size bed and its own full bath.
The garden has developed over time. Our first step was to fence it off from the deer that were sure to ravage any vegetables or flowers. We terraced a small slope, add vegetable beds and a deck for the fire pit, and another deck for the hot tub, which overlooks the garden.
So, while the property was originally supposed to be one of tutelage, it is now one of complete comfort and just plain fun!
