Come relax in the beautiful San Diego sunshine!
Kathleen & Phillip are Canadians who have lived in San Diego for eleven years. After enjoying the vibrant lifestyle of a North Park condo, they recently moved to this quiet home in the beautiful neighborhood of Talmadge. Residents here put on an annual parade in October, sing carols at the roundabout in December and work together to keep the community safe and clean.
Kathleen is a massage therapist who writes in her spare time and enjoys theatre, reading, and vegetarian cooking. Phillip is information systems architect who likes to stay active with trail running, mountain biking and surfing. Both are enthusiastic advocates of Krav Maga (martial arts) and like to relax with computer games, watching movies at home, or enjoying a good bottle of wine with friends.
These northern transplants have been won over to San Diego's persistently beautiful weather and year-round interest, but love the discovery of travel as well as playing host to family and friends who prefer to escape the Canadian winter! Their home includes a friendly terrier, Maverick and an indoor cat, Pally who is shy of strangers, but low-maintenance. Maverick requires regular walks, but can stay elsewhere during your visit.

We particularly love to visit places that offer outdoor excursions. A hike to a tumble down ruin, an old mill or river dam, a dilapidated cottage in the woods, a castle on the top of a hill - it's all good. Our most memorable visits have been to England and Southern France, which were so chock-full of history and hikes, we couldn't fit it all in. But then, we also loved the old Pacific Coast highway that allowed us to visit the ancient redwood forests in Northern California and Oregon. Human history is only part of the picture.
Kathleen and Phillip were so easy to communicate with while planning this house exchange, it was a pleasure. They have a lovely comfortable home in a nice area of San Diego. We enjoyed the near-by bars and restaurants that they thoughtfully suggested to us. We had visited San Diego before, so knew that the city was going to be great, but we were not familiar with the North Park area. It is a vibrant and interesting area close enough to walk, or a short drive, to most of the places that we went to. Kathleen and Phillip gave us the use of their smart-car, which was a great bonus when parking in the city. They also allowed us the use of other toys for use at the beach, which was great. It actually rained during our stay, a rare event I am told, but that did not dampen our spirits, as San Diego is such a lovely city, even when it is wet. I only hope they enjoyed their stay as much as we enjoyed ours.
Steve and Louella have a beautiful, pristine home that felt like an oasis of peace and quiet as soon as we arrived. Everything was very clean and clutter-free, so we felt very relaxed about settling in. The house-manual was full of useful information, including some great recommendations for dining out. Nanaimo was a fun city to explore, with loads of excellent walking routes, shopping, and out-doorsy opportunities. We returned by the end of each day, tired, but totally satisfied. It was especially nice to relax in the hot-tub after all that hiking! Having access to a reliable vehicle with bicycle racks was a thoughtful bonus, and we were able to communicate via text messages very effectively whenever any questions arose. This was our first exchanged, and I must say, I can't imagine it gets any better than this!
We just returned from a wonderful vacation in San Diego over Christmas and New Year's. Kathleen and Phillips' new home was beautiful and well appointed with everything we needed. Complete with a very friendly funny cat! Exchanges with fellow pet lovers is really a BIG asset to know your "family" will be well looked after in their own home and loved. The location was excellent and central to everywhere we wanted to go - Old Town, Coronado beaches, Balboa Park, the Midway museum and lots more. San Diego is beautiful and modern with easy access to outstanding, world famous beaches. Their Smart car was easy to get used to and fun to drive. When I ended up with a back problem, Kathleen even referred me to an excellent chiropractor. We were in excellent hands and the whole process was easy and we will definitely do this again! Anyone thinking of a San Diego vacation should definitely talk to Kathleen and Phillip!
Kevin and Aliske's home was very welcoming the moment we stepped inside from the cold! Everything was very clean and tidy, and there were plenty of amenities to make us feel right at home. I even baked cookies for christmas! Their two cats were sweet and provided adorable company during our visit, which is a bonus that just cannot be had from a hotel. We spent lots of time reading by the cozy fireplace with the cats curled up nearby. A great way to pass the time when it's snowing outside. We also had lots of time to explore Kelowna and Okanagan Valley and particularly enjoyed long walks along the beautiful lake. We loved the convenience of the car exchange and valet parking at the airport, which meant leaving house keys in the glove box and a very easy return when we got back. Our home was well cared for during our exchange, as was our cat, who seemed to enjoy the trade as much as we did! I'd highly recommend Kevin and Aliske's home for anyone who wishes to relax and explore a gorgeous region at any time of the year.
