- Julius teacher (59)
Amsterdam says HI!
We, Julius and Mieke are a couple in our mid 50's. Julius is a math teacher, Mieke a communications consultant with her own firm. We have two grown up children who live at their own. We are both interested in traveling and have travelled all over the world. We love to hike and spend our time in nature but we are also interested in culture, art and architecture and love to make short citytrips. Julius plays the violin and Mieke loves to paint. In our house you will find some of her work. Mieke also has a passion for cooking, the well equipped kitchen gives proof of it.
Our family had a fabulous experience staying at Mieke and Julius' townhouse. It was exactly as advertised: comfortable and large, with all the conveniences anyone could want. We had the use of four bicycles, so we could easily get around the neighborhood, to the nearby beach and castle, and to the lovely village of Muiden. Even better, we had the use of their boat (the dock is right out the back door), so on three occasions we explored the canals, one time making our way through the locks to the center of Amsterdam. The tram stop is very near, so it was easy and quick to get into the center of Amsterdam to enjoy the wonders of this amazing city. Many restaurants and a large grocery store are conveniently close to their townhouse. I really don't know how we could have had better accommodations for our 3-week vacation to Amsterdam.
This summer (2013) we have had a great home exchange with Julie, Charlie and their two boys. We have had several exchanges and traveled in the US before but Central Oregon was an unknown area to us. And it surprised us and exceeded our expectations in every way! The home is wonderful, with nature all around it, a wonderful garden (where we had breakfast and dinner every day – watching the hummingbirds and deer passing by) and still very close to the city centre of Bend. Jump on one of their bikes and you are down town in 15-20 minutes. Head into the other direction and you are in the mountains within the same time. We loved Bend, not at all a standard ‘Mid town USA’ but a lively city center with great restaurants and nice shops. The Old Mill District lies next to the river, where people are enjoying themselves in many ways. Canoeing, peddle boards, or just relaxing in a tube, the river carries you trough town. We also attended two great concerts in the open air in the Amphitheater, bring your own chair ( find them in Julie and Charlie’s garage!) and have a great afternoon or evening! Central Oregon has so much to offer, mountains, rivers, lakes, waterfalls, it’s easy to spend your summer there. Especially when you do so in this place, where we really felt ourselves at home!
Mieke and Julius are such gracious hosts. They were a true pleasure to get to know and we felt so comfortable with them in our home. They are just lovely people. And their home is beautiful, sitting right on a canal in Ijburg. We really enjoyed boating around the island, sitting on their lovely dock, wandering around the peaceful neighborhood, and getting to know their sweet neighbors. Plus, their location is just perfect if you want to pop into Central Amsterdam, or hop onto the highway to see other parts of the country. We highly recommend them, and would exchange again in a minute.
We had an incredibly wonderful time at Mieke and Julius' place in IJburg! Their home is modern, bright, and quiet--a nice break from the tourist scene in downtown Amsterdam. We loved biking into Amsterdam, across the famous Nescio bridge. You could also easily bike the nature path from their home. When we wanted to go to dinner in Amsterdam without the bikes, we just jumped on the tram a block from their home without checking the schedule--one comes by every six minutes! All my correspondence with Mieke was warm and easy. We're so glad we exchanged homes!
Mieke and Julius were the most wonderful hosts! Their home is located on a beautiful canal, and we used their boat several times to explore the area. Being in Ijburg was wonderfully convenient to explore Amsterdam, catch a game at Ajax stadium, or hop on the freeway to see other towns in the Netherlands. Their home is very well appointed, stylish, and comfortable, with shopping just down the street, a lovely beach, and wonderful biking trails. All our personal interactions were easy and very friendly. And they left our home in pristine condition after their stay. We would highly recommend both Mieke & Julius, as well as their lovely home for future exchanges.
In Summer 2014 we stayed in this lovely home in Alpine Meadows. We had a wonderful time, the area of Lake Tahoe is beautiful, lots of things to do and great for hiking. The home was perfect, well supplied and the beautiful decks, made us sit outside all day. Suzanne and her family are really kind, we have met with them when they came to Amsterdam. They took good care of our home, I would swap with them again without any doubts.
