We spent a splendid month on an exchange with Valerie and Sylvain. Their home is extremely clean, quiet, and comfortable. Our children loved playing in the playroom and in the back yard. Valerie has lovingly prepared a very large binder filled with detailed information on attractions near and far; by using it daily we were able to fill our days with wonderful adventures for kids and grownups alike. There is so much to do in the immediate vicinity of their home, but also within a 200-km radius. The great city of Amiens lies within a very short driving distance of their home and its cathedral is stunningly beautiful (we understood why it is considered to be one of the most famous in Europe). We loved going to the many local food markets and explore the city and its vicinity. We also took day trips to Paris, Etretat (made famous by the paintings of Monet), Fecamp, Reims (the capital of the Champagne region), Rouen, Boulogne-sur-Mer (and its renowned aquarium Nausicaa), Gerberoy (rightly considered to be the prettiest village in France), and Naours (with its amazing subterranean city). Quend beach, a mere hour away from their home, was by far the most beautiful beach in France we have ever seen. The north of France rightly enjoys the reputation of being one of France's friendliest regions. The people we met were consistently warm and helpful. This region will also be of great interest to those wishing to visit the memorials and battlefields associated with the First World War. Upon our return home, we found our house in immaculate condition; everything was so neat and clean that it was hard to believe that a family of four had lived in our home for nearly a month. Since our exchange overlapped, we had the great pleasure of meeting Sylvain, Valerie, and their two lovely, extremely polite and well-behaved children. We can't imagine a better family to exchange homes with and we feel lucky that our first home exchange was with them.
