- Gordon Ex-diplomat, now part-time trainer/teacher (59)
- Marinella English teacher (59)
Greetings from sultry Malaysia (and sunny southern Spain)!
We are both British and in our 50s: Gordon from Scotland; Marinella from London, though of Italian origin. Happily married since 1979, we have three children, all grown up. It is possible that one or other of our children plus partner might take part in an exchange, but mostly it will be just the two of us.
Our main home is here in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (# 98209), but we also have a holiday home (apartment) on the Costa del Sol in southern Spain (# 444604). Both are available for exchange (or rental). Our Spanish apartment is more flexible, eg for non-simultaneous exchanges. But it is usually rented out for most if not all of the peak European summer months of July/August, so exchanges during that period are unlikely to be possible.
A few years ago, Gordon took early retirement from the British Diplomatic Service following a career which had taken us to Budapest/Hungary (twice), Santiago/Chile, Islamabad/Pakistan and, lastly, here to Malaysia. He did so because we love KL and this region and wanted to stay on; also to have the freedom to travel even more and pursue other hobbies. Gordon now works part-time as a management trainer and English teacher (TEFL) - following in the footsteps of Marinella, who has more than 20 years' experience teaching English and similarly works part-time.
Gordon is an avid tennis player, scuba diver (PADI Divemaster) and photographer. Marinella loves cooking (which she does very well!), Mah Jong, reading and movies & television. We are both keen bridge players. Neither of us smokes (but guests can smoke on the outside patios of our properties). We are linguists and between us speak French, Spanish, Italian, German and Hungarian as well as English.
We have travelled very extensively in Southeast Asia, both to islands/beaches and other cultural and urban centres. We are happy to share this knowledge and experience to help and advise on regional trips during your stay in KL. Gordon is a particular expert on regional scuba diving, which is excellent and cheap!
August 1 — September 30, 2015 These dates are flexible
We are looking for a short exchange - a week or so - somewhere in or close to Edinburgh, but are willing to consider anywhere nice in 'God's own country'. Late summer (the dates above) preferred, but we would also consider dates close to either side of that period. We do though need as much notice as possible, because we like to book our main visits to Europe early.
August 1 — October 31, 2015 These dates are flexible
We are looking for up to two or three weeks. Our preferred destination is in or around London, especially South London, but we are prepared to consider anywhere nice in the UK. As with Scotland above, we can be flexible about precise dates; but we also need advance notice as far as possible.
July 1 — November 30, 2015 These dates are flexible
We would accept an exchange anywhere nice in Morocco, as we would like to see the whole country! We are looking for up to two weeks, but are flexible. Our own dates are flexible too, but they would need to fit in with one of our visits to Europe (the UK and/or Spain). So we need some advance notice, please.
November 1 — March 31, 2016 These dates are flexible
We are looking for an exchange of around two weeks (depending on where in South Africa the exchange is to). We can be pretty flexible over when and where to visit - the above dates are only a guide. But we would prefer to go in the South African summer, or adjoining seasons. And we would need some notice to arrange what would be a major trip.
Gordon loves diving deep into the oceans and photographing fantastic creatures. Marinella adores sitting beside them on fine sandy beaches and sunning herself!
A comfortable if small maisonette-style house in a suburb of Paris. Reasonably convenient for access to central Paris via the Metro or (at non-peak periods) car. Their car on exchange was a great help for visits to more distant places like Versailles. The main downside was the absence of a toilet upstairs by the bedrooms - making night-time needs awkward for oldies like ourselves!
We exchanged our places and cars for a long break over Xmas/NY. Gordon and Marinella's penthouse was a real joy to stay in Kuala Lumpur. It is based very conveniently practically in the centre, with a useful shopping centre with a supermarket, cafes, restaurants within a 2 minute walk. Hence the condo is perfectly located and the apartment is very airy and spacious. We were left with lots of helpful info, which was also sent to us in advance (how to get from the airport, how to get to the apartment etc). The place is very secure with friendly neighbours and a fantastic swimming pool. Two friendly kitties were very easy to look after and were great company. In return Gordon and Marinella looked after our cat Basil and our place in London. The flat was left in immaculate condition and we are happy to recommend them as a great and trustworthy exchange partners.
