Arts, culture, food, nature

We enjoy California and always like to visit the Bay Area.

We love traveling in European cities, seeing museums and just enjoying people watching. We also appreciate driving in the countryside and seeing different landscapes, stopping in small towns and villages to experience the local culture.

Janet and Steve are a truly delightful couple with whom we stayed on a Hospitality Exchange in August 2011. I had planned a 2-week California road trip to show off our state to a visiting Italian friend, and the Central Coast was not to be missed. Their entire home is decorated with colorful original artwork from around the world. Every nook and cranny calls you to explore a veritable feast for your eyes. I was able to watch as Janet worked on several prints in her spacious studio area. On our first evening, they set out local wine and cheese, and we lounged in their very comfortable living room, sharing life stories (theirs are varied and quite interesting)! The second evening, they astonished us by inviting us to share their home-cooked dinner - which we did! The town of Los Osos itself is not wildly exciting - nor does it try to be. However, it's an excellent "home base," and we found it very easy to visit nearby Cambria, Morro Bay, and San Luis Obispo. On Thursday night, on their way to a meeting, they drove us into SLO and dropped us off at the oldest ongoing outdoor nighttime Farmers Market in the US. What a surprise; I have never seen anything so huge and well-organized! It literally went on for blocks and blocks. There were several bands, and produce that even I, as a native Californian foodie, was surprised to see (baby purple artichokes, the tiniest summer squash ever, lavender-infused local honey...) and the best grilled hot dog I've ever eaten in my life. (Visit MoTav!) Rather than paying big money for a Central Coast hotel, I would heartily recommend that you contact Janet and Steve for a possible exchange. They are outstanding hosts, good people, and you'll quite possibly make some new friends! We look forward to seeing them later this year when they visit the Bay Area.
