In 2014, Ireland unveiled a tourist route on the far western edges of Europe: the Wild Atlantic Way. Stretching over 2,500 km along the Atlantic coast, it begins near Cork, in Kinsale, and ends in Donegal, at the gates of Northern Ireland. Between these two points, the route traverses nine counties, offering breathtaking coastal landscapes and towns where one can savor authentic Irish culture.

It stands as one of the world’s most spectacular road trips. The journey features wild cliffs plunging into Atlantic waves, vast sandy beaches, bogs, and heathlands where iconic sheep roam, alongside vibrant towns beating with the heart of traditional Ireland. While you should plan for at least two weeks to cover the entire Wild Atlantic Way, nothing stops you from wandering and choosing specific segments of this magnificent route.

The Vibrant Heart of Traditional Ireland

Starting from Kinsale, the route crosses the Southwest Peninsulas in the counties of Cork and Kerry. Key stops to note include the steep cliffs of Mizen Head, Bantry House, the island of Garnish, the fishing village of Castletownbere, the island of Dursey and its cable car, the Ring of Kerry, and the superb Dingle Peninsula. After a stop in Limerick, the journey reaches the western tip of County Clare, where the Loop Head lighthouse stands, offering a panorama of the Cliffs of Moher.

Next comes County Galway, in Connemara, the living heart of traditional Ireland. Here, you will find wild heathlands, bogs, stone walls, rugged coasts, Gaelic culture, and fishing villages. Take time to savor the atmosphere in the lively streets of Galway, where pubs, restaurants, and shops succeed one another. Passing through Clifden, continue to Kylemore Abbey, whose romantic silhouette is reflected in the waters of Lough Pollacappul.

Heading North!

In County Mayo, you will discover the charming town of Westport and the sacred mountain of Croagh Patrick, the ruins of Murrisk Abbey, and the wild landscapes of Achill Island, featuring bare heathlands, bogs, cliffs, and beaches, not to mention the ghost village of Slievemore. Then, after a stop at the Downpatrick Head promontory, rising 38 meters above the sea, you will pass through the pleasant town of Sligo, the heartland of poet W.B. Yeats, and can take a seaside break at Strandhill, a famous surf spot, just like Mullaghmore Head further north.

Finally, the route concludes in County Donegal, where Irish culture is firmly established, from the Irish language to traditional music and craftsmanship, including tweed (particularly in Ardara). But Donegal also boasts rugged and wild landscapes, such as the spectacular Slieve League cliffs. Other interesting sites include the Muckross Head peninsula, Ballymastocker Beach, the Fanad Head lighthouse, the Inishowen Peninsula, and finally, Malin Head at the northernmost tip of Ireland.
