Founded in 1714: Meet Natchitoches, Louisiana's "Mini New Orleans"

Natchitoches, Louisiana, has stood on the banks of Cane River Lake since 1714, making it the oldest permanent settlement in the entire Louisiana Purchase territory - older than New Orleans itself. A Creole Town Older Than New Orleans

Explorer Louis Antoine Juchereau de St. Denis founded Natchitoches (pronounced "NACK-uh-tish") in 1714, three years before New Orleans was established. The town, home to about 17,500 residents today, took its name from the Natchitoches, an Indigenous people who lived along the river long before European settlers arrived. That three-century head start shows: much of downtown sits inside a National Historical Landmark district, and the surrounding Cane River Creole National Historical Park still preserves 18th- and 19th-century Creole cotton plantations along the water. A reconstructed version of the original French fort, Fort St. Jean Baptiste, still stands on the riverbank as a state historic site.

The Cane River Zydeco Festival & Poker Run

Each Labor Day weekend, the Downtown Riverbank turns into a stage for Cajun and zydeco music. The 2026 edition runs Friday, September 4 (5 p.m.-10 p.m.) through Saturday, September 5 (10 a.m.-10 p.m.), with admission between $1 and $20. Alongside live blues and zydeco acts, the festival, organized by the Natchitoches Parish Convention & Visitors Bureau, features a poker run, a dance contest, games, and about ten food booths serving local specialties, including the town's famous crescent-shaped meat pies.

Streets Straight Out of the French Quarter

Front Street, the heart of the historic district, is lined with brick sidewalks, wrought-iron balconies, and storefronts that could pass for a smaller-scale French Quarter. The setting was convincing enough that the 1989 film Steel Magnolias, starring Dolly Parton, Sally Field, and Shirley MacLaine, was shot almost entirely in Natchitoches, and several filming locations along these same streets are still open to visitors today.

Zydeco Festival aside, Natchitoches keeps a packed calendar: a Jazz/R&B Festival in May, a Folk Festival in July, and the town's biggest draw, the Christmas Festival of Lights, which strings over 300,000 lights along Cane River Lake every year from late November through January 6. It's also an easy stop for regional travelers, about 1 hour 20 minutes from Shreveport, and under 4 hours by car from both Dallas and New Orleans.
