Discover home exchange with HomeExchange Members
Caroline and her family embodied home exchange perfectly while vacationing in Corsica. They have a large home in The Netherlands that is perfectly equipped to receive guests traveling with large groups and children. Caroline and her family enjoy spending time doing fun activities and relaxing together.
Where did you go on home exchange?
Ajaccio in Corsica
"The nice thing about home exchange is that you sort of step into someone else's life and do what they do. You cannot compare this to a traditional holiday."
How did you choose your destination and home exchange?
We started home exchange since 2001 when our youngest daughter was just 6 months old. We have been to many countries and cities and enjoy this way of holidaying. Last year we decided to subscribe to HomeExchange as we liked the idea of the different exchange possibilities. Within the hour we had a request for an exchange with a family in Ajaccio. We were actually thinking of a holiday in Norway, but hey why not Corsica?! The other side of Europe. We were all immediately enthusiastic.
What was the conversation like with your host?
I had a few conversations on the phone with our exchange family. For them it was the first time to exchange homes so it was important to feel comfortable about it. We also exchanged many text messages and photos in the months leading up to our exchange. This way we both had a good feeling of each other, but also of the homes and surroundings.
Your arrival: How was the house? Did you meet your host? Did they give you any gifts or tips for visiting the area?
A kind neighbour handed us the key and showed us the house, garden and swimming pool (!). Also the turtles whom we were going to feed during our stay. There were loads of brochures and roadmaps left for us and some homemade jams on the table. We felt at home at once and have especially enjoyed sitting outside on the terrace with our family, playing cards and looking out over the fields to the sea and harbour of Ajaccio!
How did exchanging your home influence your vacation, compared to a traditional vacation rental?
The family gave us a lot of tips what to do, like hikes in the mountains or specific beaches. The nice thing about home exchange is that you sort of step into someone’s else’s life and you do what they do. You cannot compare this to a traditional holiday.
Tell us about what you saw during your trip.
We were very happy with the various options Corsica gives you. A beautiful sea all around the Island with great beaches to relax on. But also rough areas with mountains where we had long walks. So enjoyed both! We noticed that you always need to take your time because driving through the mountains doesn’t go fast. But we had amazing views!
Bonus question: What is the best memory from your trip?
Standing high on a mountain with the family after walking a couple of hours in the sun and feeling very happy with our achievement and with the beautiful surroundings!
