If you’re looking to escape somewhere warm with good vibes this Columbus day weekend, head on over to the southwestern region of the United States. With the sizzling heat merely a summer memory, the fall season brings wonderful festivals, delicious food and plenty of warm weather.
1. Mexico City, Mexico
Skip the beach and cocktails by the pool for a different and more authentic side of Mexico. Temperature’s begin to cool down slightly in the fall, allowing you to enjoy walks through the buzzing dowtown area where you can discover the capital’s history. Mexico City has recently made its mark on the culinary scene providing you with unique flavors of traditional Mexican cuisine. While touring the city, it is reccommended you visit the Frida Kahlo Museum and the Palacio de Bellas Artes.
2. New Orleans, Louisiana
With less humidity and fewer crowds in the “Big Easy” during the fall season, walks through the French Quarter and beignets from Cafe du Monde become even more enjoyable. October brings the famous Voodoo Experience, a multi-day music festival held in City Park. Even after festival hours, you can still expect to find folks imbibing “laissez les bons temps rouler”. An October visit may also put you in spirits to experience the supernatural vibe at the Voodoo Museum along with guided ghost and vampire tours through taverns, alleyways and cemeteries.
3. San Antonio, Texas
Heading towards the southwestern region of the US, the fall season gives locals of this Texas city an opportunity to finally celebrate outdoors without the scorching heat. Oktoberfest is a popular festival held in the city during this season along with the post-Halloween Day of the Dead. If you’re looking for good eats, November’s Wurstfest brings a 10-day celebration of sausage. Througout the city you will find flamenco music as you enjoy the downtown River Walk. It is reccommended you visit the historic Alamo along with the San Antonio Missions Park where you will find historic 18th century buildings.
4. Santa Fe, New Mexico
Fall season means chilly season where you will find yourself entranced by the smell of roasted peppers being sold on roadside stands. The famous Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, a yearly festival in October that brings over 500 hot air balloons is just a quick ride from the city. Santa Fe is known for Spanish Colonial charm where you will find pueblo styled architecture dating from 17th century.
5. San Diego, California
If you haven’t let up from the summer fun, this southern California city will satisfy all your summer lusting. Surfers and wave enthusiasts agree that fall is the best season to catch a wave and end your surf with a fresh fish taco. In late October, you will find horse racing at the Del Mar Racetrack with a Hollywood fashion contest. You will also find unique brews at the San Diego Beer Week.
