Our Home
It is part of an old farmhouse dating back to the 17th century, surrounded by a large lemon garden. The house has a surface area of 155 square meters (about 1670 square feet) and can sleep six people; it also has a patio and a large terrace with a view of the valley of Amalfi and a partial view of the sea.
The residential area of Amalfi is spread along the base and on the slopes of a narrow valley with steep, rocky walls, which descends to meet the beach and the sea below. Our house is found within this valley, attached to this steep, rocky slope, partly facing the coastline, and partly surrounded by terraces of lemons. Here, you will be at the point where the city ends and the country begins. You will not find crowds of tourists here, but rather will discover the placid, peaceful life of the true residents of Amalfi.
In front of the house, you will find a patio of 40 square meters (about 430 square feet), shaded by a pergola, paved, and with a beautiful view of the valley below. On this patio, there is a table with chairs. A glass door connects this space with the kitchen: this makes it a perfect place to enjoy relaxing breakfasts or leisurely lunches and dinners in the fresh air! In a corner of the patio you will find an external shower.
The house is mostly entered by way of the kitchen (but there is another entrance also on the second floor): it is a spacious and comfortable country kitchen, with a great fireplace at one side, a long table for meals in the center, and a comfortable cooking area with lots of space and many small and useful items of kitchen equipment. You will also find four burners, an oven, a dishwasher, a washing machine and a fridge with freezer.
On the ground floor you will also find a store-room, a bedroom with a double bed and a bathroom with shower.
An interior stairway leads from the kitchen to the upper level.
Here, you will find two rooms side by side, used as the living area. Along the walls, which are whitewashed with lime, you will find many stonework divans covered with colorful red and green cushions. There is also a fireplace.
The rooms are paved with refined antique white artisanal majolica tiles, and decorated with graceful pieces of local and exotic handicrafts.
A veranda connects this living space with a terrace of 60 square meters (about 645 square feet), which is paved with terracotta tiles.
From this terrace you will be able to enjoy an expansive view of the valley below, which culminates in the center of Amalfi and the sea, and you will be able to relax in sun-lounging chairs in the cool shade of a beautiful bougainvillea pergola.
You will be surrounded by vases of red geraniums and antique urns overflowing with flowers, while the scent of lemons drifts up to greet you from the surrounding garden.
You will have at your disposal a large table, benches, and deck chairs.
A white stairway will take you from the living room to the upper level, where you will find two bedrooms and a small bathroom with shower.
In one room, you will find a double bed and a window with a view of the valley and the sea. In the other, there are two single beds and a high window that does not offer a view.
ADSL connection is available.
The house has no central heating and is surrounded by green, so it is rather cold until late spring. It is therefore available from mid May to September/early October.
Not accessible for people with disabilities.
The house is unfit for toddlers or restless children. Grown up children are welcome.

Our Neighborhood
The property is partly facing the coastline, and partly surrounded by these terraces of lemons.
To reach the property you will have to pass through the center of Amalfi, by car or on foot. After this, you will need to take a pedestrian walkway of about 100 meters (about 330 feet), which includes 150 stairs. As from 2008 a porter service with electric vehicles is available at a charge, as is the case in Capri: it suffices to go to Piazza Flavio Gioia, look around for the porters and leave the luggage to them; they will take care and deliver the luggage at our home, without you having to wait for them.
The house is the perfect place to enjoy the peace of the countryside yet without being far from the center and the beach.
From the property you will be able to walk to the piazza of the Cathedral of Amalfi, which is the "sitting room" of the village. Here there are elegant shops and excellent cafes, pastry shops and restaurants that set up their tables outdoors. You will find it very pleasant to stop here to enjoy a drink in front of the splendid and imposing façade of the Cathedral.
If you walk for 50 more meters (55 yards) you will find the large Flavio Gioia square, with its promenade along the sea, the access to the beaches, and the bus station for the buses that connect all the villages along the coast, including Ravello and Positano, as well as Pompeii and Paestum.
Here there is also the quay, where you will be able to board ferries or rent boats to visit the coast from the sea and reach Positano, Capri, Sorrento, Ischia, Naples, Salerno and other spots.
Not to be missed, if you are fond of classical music, are the famous concerts of the Ravello Festival. If you like hiking you must not miss the trails marked on the mountains of the coast, the most famous of which is called the "Sentiero degli Dei" (Path of the Gods).
Extremely close to the house you will find the picturesque path that connects Amalfi with the little village of Pontone, which peaks 250 meters (820 feet) above Amalfi.
You will not need a car. Public transportation is comfortable, cheap and efficient. If, however, you do bring a car, you need to pay parking fares; in the past two years, however, parking restrictions have been introduced for non-residents, (including us therefore)... and they change every year; a car, therefore, could be a headache especially in July and August.
The beach and the port of Amalfi are just 1 kilometer (about half a mile) away.
Amalfi may be a good departure point to visit Positano, Pompei, Capri, Paestum and, of course, the rest of the Costiera amalfitana and Sorrento.

Our Dates
We usually travel during the winter as we tend to enjoy our house in Amalfi during the summer months (July-August); in principle we prefer non-simultaneous exchanges, but are ready to make exceptions if we are really interested in the offered destination.

The world is our home. Tempt us.
We are seeking a one-month stay in Barcelona or London in February-March 2013.
We are arranging a 2-week exchange in Buenos Aires for the fall/winter 2013; would like to extend our journey to Chile or Brazil... so offers from Santiago de Chile or an attractive location in Brazil would be welcome (not more than a week in each location as we need to be on the move).
We would very much like to spend one or two months in London, UK, in late winter/earlyspring 2014.
For health reasons, we need to be in city centers or very close to a main city

About Us
Roberto, in his late sixties, is a retired bank officer while Silvana is a very active free-lance linguist. We love traveling and have, in fact, lived abroad for many years (mainly in Africa) when young(er). We are non-smokers, but would not mind welcoming smoking guests who, however, promise not to smoke in the bedrooms. We have a 27-year old son who lives abroad at the moment. We are very friendly and like to expand our world, making new experiences and new acquaintances. We may travel with friends, one or two couples. The people involved in the exchange may vary therefore from 2 to 6.
