Our Home

Our house is a more then fifty year old, but newly renovated spacious detached villa, located in a quiet neighbourhood. It`s located in the middle of a big garden with old trees. In summer you can't see it because of the trees, but it's right next to a cimetry.
It is a luminous home of about 300 m2 with 5 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and all the amenities we need for our daily living. We can accomodate 7 people and a smaller kid.

On the main floor there is a big and well equipped kitchen open to the dining room. We love to be able to be with our many guests while we are cooking! There is a big living room with an open fireplace, which is great in winter and a veranda room we use as our office.

On the first floor there is one bedrooms with a queen size bed, the other 4 bedrooms are on the second floor. One with a queen size bed, the master bedroom, and our guest room with a "normal" bed. The room of our youngest son is equipped with a toddler bed. There are two bathrooms and a separate toilet on the second floor.

Our Neighborhood

We live in Gümligen, a nice village on the outskirts of Bern, the capital of Switzerland. You will find here everything you need for your daily living (banks, post office, drugstore, all kind of magasins, an excellent bakery, doctors and vets) . There is plenty of forest around with walking and biking trails and in a few minutes you are at the Aare River, one of the most popular places for walking, biking or jogging all year around and swimming in summer (don't miss it! )
To go to the centre of Bern it will take you only ten minutes by car or bus (next bus stop is just in front of our house) .

Bern is a beautiful city and placed on the UNESCO Worldheritage list! Switzerlands capital owes its charm to an intact mediaveal cityscape with surprisingly broad streets, more than 6 km of arcades, colourful sculptured Renaissance fountains, largely unimpaired sandstone facades and a unique rooftop landscape. Beside that it offers you a wide collection of culturel activities. There are a variety of outstanding museums (a new Klee museum will be opening his gates in summer 2005) , some theaters, a casino and our famous bear pit.
If you are interested in physics: the physicist Albert Einstein lived here for quiete a while and it was in Bern that he wrote his first treatise on the special theory of relativity. Since it's a jubilee there are a lot of special events in 2005.

In and around the city you will find many possibilities to do sport. There are tennis courts, free open air swimming pools, public golf courses and thermal baths to only tell a few of them.

An other advantage of our home is the central location in the middle of Switzerland. The next motorway exit is only two minutes away and you also can use our excellent train system which is very extensive and great fun (exspecially with kids) . Only 20 minutes from here is Thun, the gate to the Bernese Oberland. Famous touristic destinations like Grindelwald, Adelboden, Zweisimmen and many more offer you there all year around a breathtaking nature and a wide selection of outdoor sports and culturel activities. This region will just never fail to give you an idea of what to do in your leisure time. How about skiing in the Alps, excursions to the Jungfraujoch, diving or sailing in the mountain lakes. . .

To conclude, Switzerland is a small country. With train or car you are in a hour in the french speeking part of Switzerland in Genf or Montreux (and near the french border) in Zürich, Basel or Lucerne. Add a few more kilometers and you are in Lugano (Ticino) and in Italy or near the Grisons with its famous locations like St. Moritz, Davos or Arosa. There are almost endless possibilities. . .

About Us

We are a family of five. My husband Alexander (42) and me (Monika, 41) are both doctors and work at local hospitals in Bern. Our daughter Alice has become nine in may, our son Enea was born in october 2006 and Gianin, our youngest son just turned three. All of us like to travel, and since our interests are not always identical, we normally have very varied holidays where we cover everything from major culture events to outdoor sports and visiting historical places.
The only ones who don't like to travel are our two norwegian forest cats. They will stay at home and look after the house. But since they are not yet able to open the fridge, we need somebody to feed them.
