Our Home

We live in a lovely family home in Oranjezicht, Cape Town - very convenient to explore all the Cape Peninsula gems without the traffic. It is an old house and needs some care with a big front garden complete with BBQ, trees, veggie patches and herbs. The swimming pool is old, needs a bit or repair, but is very big. We are situated in the heart of Cape Town, access to Table Mountain walkways are 100 metres away from the front gate. We adore living here, right in the heart of things, yet our house is in a pedestrian lane with fantastic neighbours. We live here to be near the great outdoors including mountain, beaches, national parks yet staying in a big city. Cape Town is an international culinary destination.

The MAIN house and GUEST APARTMENT is ONLY AVAILABLE AS ONE ACCOMMODATION UNIT.

=== THE MAIN HOUSE ===

We love to cook and entertain so the kitchen is well equipped with modern appliances including an espresso machine, juicers, smoothie makers, tangine, microwave, toaster, electric oven, fridge, dishwasher, washing machine and clothes dryer. Since we try to live organic and hormone free we have 3 fridges to store natural foods.

We have a master bedroom with en suite, a 2nd bedroom with 2 bunk beds, a teenage pad with a double bed, a sitting room with a wood-burning fireplace, a big dining room with a 10 seater and playroom. We have never owned a TV but do have a projector in the playroom for DVDs and internet streaming. We have 10Mbs unlimited internet access with a wifi network in the whole house.

It is a comfortable, big, and welcoming but old home.

=== THE GUEST APARTMENT ===

- One room on top with double bed and study table
- kitchenette and bathroom at the bottom.
- A bath with a shower over the bath
- Access is separate from the main house, own door, via the west side passage next to the house.

Our Neighborhood

Our neighbourhood

Since the 2010 Soccer World Cup the public bus transport is top class. Two bus stops are currently being built less than 5 minutes away from us, and the main hub on this side of the mountain where we do our regular shopping.

--- In our neighbourhood ---

The end of our street leads into a park that leads into the Table Mountain Park. Our one neighbour is the Tech Gardens rugby field - if you are lucky you may see visiting rugby teams from all over the world training - we have seen them all. We have 4 parks nearby - the one at the end of the street, Deer Park, the big De Waal Park and the smaller Oranjezicht Homestead Park. We walk to the following delicatessens and dining places, Carluccis for breakfast, Deer Park
for a quick bite and Woodlands Pizza. Our neighbours are our friends, not just other people. The area has many popular guest houses. Our school is two blocks away. In the morning and evenings our street it is filled by locals and travellers running, cycling, walking or taking the dog for a walk while getting to the park.

--- NEARBY (less than 10 minutes by car) ---

We often walk to the following places

Table Mountain - Featuring some of the most spectacular views from the summit, which also has hiking trails and a restaurant. (You walk there from our front gate)
Quirky Loop Street up to the top of Kloof Street.
The Mount Nelson Hotel
The Gardens shopping centre
The very very unique Labia movie theatre
The Company Gardens - like a Paris public space or a small NY Central Park.
Cosmopolitan restaurants galore

Better to drive

Sunset in Camps Bay - Watch the sun slip behind Camps Bays palm trees as you join the jetset crowd for cocktails at Caprice.
V & A Waterfront - Arguably the most visited attraction in Cape Town is the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront with its assortment of shops, eateries, entertainment and sightseeing facilities, all set within the Cape Town Harbour.
Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens - Take your time at a visit to these beautiful gardens, famous around the world for its floral displays, proteas and rare species of plant that have been saved from extinction. Time your visit right and catch a summer sunset concert.

--- BY FERRY ---

Robben Island - a former prison (now a national monument), was home to many of South Africa’s freedom fighters including Nelson Mandela.

--- FURTHER AWAY ---

Cape Point Nature Reserve - Take the scenic route along the False Bay coast, passing the quaint fishing village of Kalk Bay. Stop at the naval harbour of Simonstown and visit the penguin colony at Boulders Beach before continuing on to Cape Point.

The Wine Route -Take a drive down to Stellenbosch, and take in the sights of the mountains and the fine flavours of a well-matured wine.

Groot Constantia wine estate- With a wine museum, restaurants, and free tastings in an historic wine estate.

--- EVEN FURTHER ---

Shark Diving at Gansbaai - Close encounters of the scary kind - experience the fury, power and grace of the shark, while staying alive to tell the tale!

Whale watching along the coast.

Our Destinations

We travel a lot. We love experiencing the world and what she has to offer. And do we like to enjoy local food (what we have eaten in the past is best not described here, best to say that we are adventurous). Once in France the FRENCH chef came out to confirm that the foreigners would be EXPECTED to eat the rare kidneys they ordered. Oops and the big translation mistake in Hong Kong - the waiters brought everything we ASKED about, not what we ordered.

We do not travel to do what we do in Cape Town and we expect to be surprised, even misadventures are adventures. We do not expect to find what we leave behind at home - all familiar creature comforts are left behind.. Being THE cause of a KLM flight delay on JFK, getting caught on the road in a tropical monsoon, getting lost in the Fontainebleau forest, losing glasses in a Thai ocean, taking a wrong ski slope and learning to jump right there and then are all just part of the journey.

We would love to hear what we can enjoy in your part of mother earth.

About Us

I am Hendrik, a South African Chartered Accountant and my wife Catherine who cares for our family We have two girls , Anya aged 17 and Inez aged 8. While both Catherine and I enjoy city living we were both raised in small villages in South Africa so we LOVE small little towns in rural settings. And it seems that the kids are getting to understand the delicious joy of small towns.

We have Kerry Blue Irish terrier called Skye and Devon Rex called Tuya - both breeds do not shed hair and are extremely playful.

We also have a beach house listed as #343949 in a remarkable seashore and river estuary holiday town called Infanta.

We are pacifists, love the outdoors, conservationist and organic eaters.
