The Home
Our new home is a 2,000 sf 3 bedroom, 2 & 1/2 bathroom modern home located in the Silver Lake district of Los Angeles. This is one of the older areas of the city with homes built on the hills surronding Silver Lake, a one mile long reservoir. The hills, lake, and trees give the neighborhood a rural/suburban feeling. Though our house is located only four miles (6 km) from downtown, it enjoys panoramic views of homes in the hills and the mountains beyond.
Our modern house was completed in 2009 and features an open floor plan with expansive living, kitchen, dining, and den areas. The step down living room has high ceilings and a tri-fold doors which opens to the courtyard and outdoor fireplace. The living level also features a built in stereo system with volume controls in every room. The house has electric solar panels on the roof and is fully air conditioned. The dining area is highlighted by a large skylight with expansive light well. The living level floor is stained concrete while the bedroom floor is finished with bamboo flooring. The attached two car garage has an automatic opener and direct access to the house.
We have an adult sized mountain bike, road bike and cyclocross bike which you can use, but are serious bikes with clip in pedals.

The Neighborhood
Silver Lake is centrally located yet feels removed from the bustle of town. Our house is located 15 minutes from: the Hollywood Bowl (outdoor concerts) , the Greek Theater (more outdoor concerts) , Universal Studios, Hollywood, the Museum of Natural History, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and Downtown LA (including the Museum of Modern Art, Chinatown, Staples Center, Little Tokyo) . Our home is 30 minutes from: the beach, the Getty Art Museum, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, Raging Waters, and Magic Mountain.
5 minutes from our house you'll find Griffith Park, the largest city park in America, with miles of mountainous hiking/horse trails, the LA Zoo, the Observatory, the Western Heritage Museum, a carousel, horseback and pony rides, tennis courts, and 4 public golf courses.
There is a lot of Los Angeles history in Silverlake. The famous silent film star Antonio Moreno built his huge estate on our hill in the early 1920's. The hill, as a result, became known as the "Moreno Highlands" (Moreno Drive is the name of our street) . The larger Silver Lake area also includes Edendale which was the first center for the Los Angeles film industry. Moviemaking began here in 1909 with the Bison Studios (which made one-reeler Westerns) , followed in 1912 by Mack Sennett Studios. Cowboy film star Tom Mix built his studio here in the late 1910s, and Walt Disney's first studio was also here.
The area was also a mecca for some of the first modern architects including Richard Neutra, Rudolf Schindler, and John Lautner. Silver Lake has the largest concentration of these homes in the City. Indeed, Silver Lake is known in Los Angeles as having the greatest concentration of diverse archictecture in the City.
The Silver Lake community has always attracted artists, writers, musicians, actors, and movie executives. In addition, it has one of the top public elementary schools in Los Angeles, and thus has lots of children. Great shopping, coffee shops, and restaurants are all located within a short walk from our house. In addition, the streets and stairways which traverse the hillsides provide excellent views and scenery for walking. Indeed, walking around the neighborhood is a great way to meet the many other neighbors who also enjoy this activity.

The Dates
Summer of 2009 works well for us - this would extend from May through the end of September. Also would be interested in shorter, more local exchanges at other times of the year.
The Destination
Make a suggestion! We've been to Sweden, Canada, France, Spain, and Italy.
The People
There are four of us. Todd is a commercial real estate mortgage lender for an international life insurance company and Catherine designs art books for the Getty Museum. Bridget is an junior in high school and Roy is an eighth grader. We have traveled in Europe several times. We also travel to Mexico and Canada regularly.
We have participated with great success and enjoyment in a number of home exchanges over the past 8 years. We have exchanged with families in: Stockholm, Sweden; Montreal, Canada; Paris, France, and Madrid Spain. The homes we have stayed in have all been nice, but also diverse...ranging from a large home in suburban Stockholm, to a lovely 3 bedroom apartment in central Madrid.
We were very involved building the house we live in and pride ourselves on keeping it well maintained. We understand that others feel the same sense of pride about their homes and treat their home as we do ours.
