Our Home
My Quaker/Federal style home was built before 1790 and remodeled by us four years ago. All the original features were kept while still renewing all the baths and the kitchen. We are situated in a lovely garden on a tree lined street in the 'old historic district' of Nantucket village. There are gardens and patios on three sides and the house is surrounded by trees so that in summer we are very private. It is a five block walk (past beautiful Sea Captains homes) to the heart of the village and all the beaches are but a short drive. Nantucket is seven miles wide by fifteen miles long, so there are beaches to suit everyone. Our home is two and a half stories, and some of the original staircases are narrow, so that should be kept in mind for any exchange. Two bedrooms have queens size beds and two bedrooms have pairs of twin beds, to sleep eight people. Two more can sleep on trundle mattresses in the children's room. There are three full bathrooms (two on the second and one on the third) and a half bath on the main floor. The queen bedrooms are en suite and the twin bedrooms share a bath.
Our Neighborhood
Milk Street is one of the loveliest streets on Nantucket, shaded by ancient elm trees, and a short distance from whatever you want to do. Delightful restaurants and fabulous shopping are just blocks away, and surfing beaches or gentle children's beaches are only a few miles in any direction. We do not have a pool, but I could possibly (probably) arrange for use of the Sankaty Head Golf and Beach Club pools, which are wonderful. I have two cats and a dog, so if you are allergic, you might want to chose another home. They will not be in the home during the exchange, but my caretaker also has a dog and her cottage is on the property. She is almost never home (she owns a shop in the village) so there is no need to worry about intrusion; in fact she can be wonderfully helpful to any exchange. I can arrange to have a cleaning service come weekly during your stay. My home has five original fireplaces (only one had to be taken out to put in the heating system and all the floors are the original wide pine boards. It was built some time before 1790 and is believed to have been moved to its present location from the original harbor of Sherborn on Nantucket.

Other Information
Nantucket is such a special place that it is hard to over state an exchange here. So much is going on in the summer and children can join in many, many activities. There is a restaurant to suit everyone's taste and the same with the beaches. Try a different one every day! The speed limit is 45 mph, and there are bike trails on most of the major roads - there are only five of them. All roads are two lane country roads. There are no stop lights on the Island. Our beaches are free to enjoy and most are reached by small dirt roads. I have a new 2012 Jeep that can be used if we can make an exchange. Most of us who live on this Island year round consider ourselves very lucky indeed!

Our Dates
I am a retired widow, so any date is really available, however late Spring, Summer and Fall are really the best times for an exchange as that is when Nantucket is most glorious.
Our Destinations
I prefer areas where hiking and walks are available and small restaurants and pubs. I also love markets and village life.

About Us
I am Dee and I have been recently widowed. My husband and I had a wonderful exchange to Florence several years ago and were going to do another to England soon - but I was forced to cancel with his death. My two daughters usually travel with me, along with my son in law and my two grandchildren, 12 and 14. I am an artist and our home is filled with paintings and antiques. I am also meticulous about my homes upkeep so you would not be disappointed by beautiful pictures but the reality somewhat less so. My home is set up for entertaining, and there are dishes and silverware for a crowd. The patios have teak furniture and adirondack chairs and are lovely and private. My front garden had one of my ships figureheads mounted amid the climbing roses, but alas, I have sold her. Perhaps by the next exchange I will have the new one finished and mounted. My Border Collie is the most wonderful dog - ever! - and she will be in the caretakers cottage, so there will be two Border Collies in the yard. I can arrange to have her placed away if that is preferred. I have two cats - equally wonderful - but they will be boarded during any exchange.
