We are going to be on sabbatical during the academic year August 2010-July 2011, and we are looking for a home exchange either in the Swiss speaking region (Suisse romande) or in France so that our children can attend a French speaking school.

The Home
We have a large Greek revival 1850 home in Bath, Maine, an historic ship buiding town, quiet and attractive, on the beautiful rocky Maine coast. The house is located on the edge of the historic district in Bath and is in wonderful condition. We completed extensive renovations to our home in summer 2006. It has a large double living room, formal dining room, large new kitchen with sun room dining area (dishwasher, Viking stove/oven, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, toaster oven, very well-equipped, with many small appliances), butler's pantry, toilet w/sink, and laundry/mud room (washer and dryer), and office on the ground floor. There are two fireplaces (one working) in the living room and another working fireplace in the upstairs office. There are hardwood floors throughout the house. Upstairs are four bedrooms, the master bedroom with a queen-sized bed, another with a double bed, a smaller bedroom with a single bed or crib, and an office/guest bedroom with a single bed or twin beds. There are two full baths upstairs, one with shower and whirpool bath and one with bathtub/shower. There is also a full basement with a small workshop area and a second refrigerator. We choose not to have cable TV but have a TV, VCR, and international DVD player for watching films in the living room. We have a Macintosh computer with a high-speed internet connection. Our house is full of books in French and in English (including children's books), a large CD collection and children's videos/CD's in English and French, and tons of toys.
We have a large pleasant fenced-in yard with a brick patio and nice landscaping. Outside there is a nice patio set of table and chairs, a lounge chair. We also have a badminton set, a nice swingset/junglegym, a sandbox and blow-up pool for children if desired, and beach chairs, along with garden tools.
I own this property.

The Neighborhood
Maine is nicknamed "vacationland" for good reason - outdoor activities from sea kayaking to hiking, to boat excursions, to days at the beach abound. Maine is known for its beautiful coastline and comfortable temperatures, its lighthouses, seafood (lobster in particular) , moose and other wildlife. Bath itself is situated on a large river that runs down into the ocean and has several nice restaurants, a café, a wine bar, specialty shops, and a maritime museum. Lighthouse and wildlife boat excursions leave from the town dock. You can easily walk down into town or to the nearby village green from the house. There are concerts there during the summer and there is a playground near our house at the elementary school. There are two nearby beaches, both state-protected and beautiful. One must drive down one of two peninsulas to get to them (about 20-30 minutes) . Maine's serpentine coastline makes it so that water is never far whereever you are, and the mid-coast area boasts many beautiful spots to visit. The neighboring city of Brunswick is home to the Maine musical theater, with professional musicals running all summer on the Bowdoin College campus, along with a concert series, art museum and artic museum. Maine also has a host of day and overnight camps of all sorts for children and teenagers. Our home is about 20 minutes north of Freeport, home to LL Bean and countless brand-name outlets, and 40 minutes north of Portland, famous for its renovated old port area with fabulous restaurants, a children's museum, an art museum, theater and concerts. From Portland you can take whale-watching trips. Gorgeous Acadia National Park is north about 2 1/2 hours.

Other Information
We have two Subarus in good condition, one Impreza outback (2000) and one Subaru Outback that could be exchanged (one or both). We also have car seats for children of all ages.
We have very nice, helpful neighbors. Katherine's parents live just across the river and could be of help at anytime and could also meet you upon arrival. The nearest airport is Portland International but ground transportation from Boston's Logan airport is also convenient.
We are non-smokers and only exchange with non-smokers. We have a cat for whom we could find other living quarters with no problem (but you may want to know this in case of allergy). We could negotiate about pets. A cleaning person comes once every two weeks if you would like that to continue while you are in our home.
We did a home exchange in summer 2000 with a family from Canada and several others with Parisian families since and have always had a very positive experience. We take very good care of our own home and will take very good care of yours.

We are a family of four. We - Alexandre and Katherine - are in our early forties, both university French professors. We have well-behaved children: a daughter Claire, who is ten years old, and a three year old boy, Aymeric. Alexandre is Swiss/French and Katherine is American. We are all bi-lingual.
