Our Home
Modern, funky, 3 storey townhouse close to the centre of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysian Borneo. 3 Bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, wooden floors, great relaxation spaces inside and out including patio with swingbed and ceiling fans. Car port for 2 vehicles. Vehicle exchange possible. All air-conditioned and all mod cons. Great base for experiencing all the natural wonder of this beautiful state.
Our Neighborhood
Sabah is an incredibly interesting State to visit for nature lovers. Activities include climbing Mt. Kinabalu and Trusmadi, jungle tours, amazing scuba diving in Sipadan, Layang Layang and Lankayan, white-water rafting, cycle tours, orangutan sanctuary, proboscis monkeys tours and many more. See www.sabahtourism.com for more information.
Kota Kinabalu is a lively and modern, small city in Sabah, which is a predominantly Christian state. English is widely spoken since this used to be British North Borneo. I know people who have lived her for 15 years and only speak a few words of Bahasa Malaysia. It is a laid-back place and feels a lot smaller than the 400,000 or so official population would suggest. Our house is close to town and the sea so it will feel more like a town than a city.
KK, as locals call it, has some 5 star resorts, golf courses, islands to visit just off shore and tribal culture. Although this is Borneo you might be surprised to learn that we want for nothing in terms of mod-cons. Hospitals, Cinemas, shopping malls, fast food chains, brand clothes outlets, satellite TV, internet and all of these things are part of life so you won't really be 'going native' (unless you want to!)
There is a fun nightlife scene with a range of restaurants and bars with plenty of live music. Sabah is famed for its fresh seafood but there is something for everyone here: Malaysian, Indian, Chinese, Thai, Italian, Modern western fusion. The KK Waterfront is a long wooden promenade gazing out to the islands and is where much of the nightlife is centred.

Our Destinations
We have now completed 3 successful exchanges. We have a couple of reviews here, please check them out. Open to any destination. All suggestions will be considered and replied to.
We go to Ireland every year in July/August so shorter European stopovers ( eg Paris, London, Edinburgh Amsterdam, Berlin and anywhere in Ireland) are also possible.
For destinations outside Europe we would consider a 2 week minimum stay.
Within Asia, weekends or short stays might be possible for places like KL, Singapore, Hong Kong, Bali, Manila, Jakarta.

We are a couple, mid-30s. He is Irish and runs a scuba diving travel business which can be done remotely with no needs other than an internet connection. She is Malaysian and currently works for Novotel in KK.
We enjoy travel, diving, hiking and gardening. We have done a fair amount of work to the house to make it a stylish yet comfortable space. He is particularly proud of the front garden which is now a roofed-off patio with ceiling fans and a swing-bed on which to relax with a cold beer.
She is local and loves to travel particularly to places that are warm and have a vibrant culture (nevertheless we often visit the UK and Ireland!). He settled here after passing through as a tourist and being amazed by the ease of life and the fact that KK is Asian but not too Asian, a city but not a big city, well connected with flights and touristy but not too touristy.
We love living in KK.
