Our Neighborhood

The house is well situated for a large number of activities. Windsor (five miles away) is the home of the royal family - the Queen spends much of her time at the castle. A short walk across the River Thames from Windsor will take you to the world's most famous private school, Eton, attended by Prince Harry and Prince William along with numerous past Prime Ministers. http://www.windsor.gov.uk/ or http://www.windsor-information.co.uk/
Also close by is the famous Royal Ascot racecourse - the world's oldest (recently massively redeveloped) two miles away, setting for the lavish Royal Ascot race meet every summer which draws the royals and the jet-set, some of whom arrive by horse and carriage through the adjacent Windsor Great Park. Regular race meets take place here through the year, both flat racing and jumps racing http://www.ascot.co.uk/ Royal Windsor racecourse set alongside the River Thames also has excellent racing every Monday evening through the summer months - boats ferry racegoers from the town centre to the racecourse a short distance away. The Olympic rowing venue for the London 2012 games is situated across the river from Windsor racecourse at Dorney (it belongs to Eton school). Legoland, one of the country's best theme parks (great for kids) is three miles away, and further major theme parks Thorpe Park (25 minutes drive) and Chessington World Of Adventures are also within easy reach. Great fun with forest tree canopy activities (zip wires etc) three miles away at Swinley Forest near Bracknell (www.goape.co.uk) where you will also find a terrific swimming pool/fun park directly opposite (Coral Reef). The area is convenient for golfing, walking and horseriding enthusiasts. Mill Ride golf course is just a few hundred yards away while one of England's most famous courses Wentworth (home of the world matchplay) is seven miles away. There are stables within easy reach with excellent riding in Windsor Forest and Windsor Great Park which are two/three miles away. Windsor Great Park is large (owned by the crown estate) - roughly five miles by four - and home to herds of deer and numerous ponds and lakes including Virginia Water and Savill Gardens (botanical gardens) . Excellent terrain for walking and biking (we have bikes available) . For those with a taste for the high life we are one mile away from the Royal Berkshire Polo Club. One of the world's most famous polo grounds, The Guards' Club/Smiths Lawn is situated inside Windsor Great Park - there's usually a match attended by the royals in the summer months. There's an Italian restaurant roughly 7 minutes walk away down the B-road. Local supermarket is three minutes drive away and there are several excellent country pubs and restaurants in the vicinity, including two of the world's best restaurants according to a recent survey, both in the village of Bray close to Windsor, The Fat Duck was voted number one in the world (have been there - very nice with prices to match - get along and see what you think!) Just around the corner is the famous Waterside Inn owned and run by celebrity chef Michel Roux, again fantastic food (for deep pockets) and quite an experience. Closer still within three minutes drive is the excellent upmarket country pub/restaurant 'The Winning Post' in Maiden's Green, one of the best in the area.
Driving distances are not great in England so sightseeing is extremely accessible. London with all it has to offer is only 30 miles away and can be easily reached from local railway stations, on the fast line from Slough in less than 20 minutes to Paddington (Slough is a five minute drive or train ride from Windsor), or from Windsor itself or Ascot (50 minutes ride into Waterloo station). Driving into London is not a great idea these days with congestion charge to pay and traffic etc. Other historic sites nearby include Runnymede on the River Thames where the Magna Carta was signed, picturesque Henley-on-Thames home of the summer regatta, and countless Thames-side villages http://www.henley-on-thames.org/ We have a canoe which we use on a nice stretch of the Thames west of Windsor. University town Oxford is less than an hour's drive, the famous Stonehenge stone circle roughly the same, some of England's most 'chocolate-box' scenery in the Cotswold Hills one or two hours away, the picturesque New Forest and south coast beaches one to one and a half hour's drive - and historic Roman town Bath and Shakespeare's Stratford also both within two hours drive.
